Many patients also said they wanted to be able to be more physically active and avoid the stigma associated with being overweight. Following weight-loss surgery, the patients lost an average of 95 pounds per person. As a result of this weight loss , the patients achieved many of their surgery goals, including better health, the study revealed. “We thought there would be more negative reactions to the surgery, but the response was very positive,” study co-author Jennie Jacobs Kronenfeld, an Arizona State University School of Social and Family Dynamics professor, said in a news release from the American Sociological Association. “Most people had improvements in chronic health problems.” Specifically, the patients experienced improvements in diabetes , heart disease and sleep apnea . High blood pressure risk rising among U.S. youths

Can Debt Raise Your Blood Pressure?

A new study from the American Heart Association shows that over the past 13 years, children and adolescents have seen stark rises in their risk for high blood pressure. That could set them up for a lifetime of stroke, heart disease and kidney failure. “High blood pressure is dangerous in part because many people don’t know they have it,” study author Dr. Bernard Rosner, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Mass., said in a statement . “It’s a very sneaky thing.” High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a problem in which blood pushes too hard against a person’s blood vessels, potentially causing damage to the vessels and organs like the heart, according to WebMD . Risk factors for hypertension in children include obesity, sodium intake and family history.

Finance Sat, Aug 24, 2013, 4:46 PM EDT – U.S. Markets closed Can Debt Raise Your Blood Pressure? By Brandon Ballenger | Money Talks News Tue, Aug 20, 2013 7:39 PM EDT Print High debt can mean high blood pressure, a new study from Northwestern University says at least for young adults. Researchers used data on 8,400 young adults, ages 24-32, to examine associations between debt and health. Heres what it found: 20 percent of participants said they would still be in debt even if they liquidated all assets. A high debt-to-asset ratio was associated with high perceived stress (12 percent higher than average), depression (13 percent higher) and worse self-reported general health. Those with high debt had a 1.3 percent increase in diastolic blood pressure compared with the average which is a bigger deal than it might sound.

Washington Nationals go beyond the eye chart with vision training

Medically reviewed by Lindsey Marcellin, MD, MPH Have you ever spotted a small speck, dot, or squiggle floating in the air, only to have it flit away when you tried to look at it directly? Or have you noticed flickering lights or lightning streaks that you knew weren’t really there? If so, you are one of many people who have experienced the common vision phenomenon known as eye floaters and flashes. The majority of people 7 out of every 10, in fact will experience eye floaters and flashes at some point in their lives. They are a normal part of the aging process and, most of the time, not considered a medical problem. However, a rapid onset of many eye floaters and flashes could indicate that a retinal tear has occurred; if not treated immediately, this could cost you your eyesight. Why Eye Floaters and Flashes Occur Our eyes are filled with a clear substance known as vitreous gel that helps the eyeball keep its shape while allowing light to pass through to the retina; the retina is located on the eye’s back wall and contains nerve cells that perceive visual signals from light.

I actually rarely ever struck out, which was surprising to me because it was a huge, drastic change for me. Of all the major professional sports, baseball is most dependent on the eyes. Pitchers read the fingers of a catcher signaling a pitch more than 60 feet away. Fielders watch the spin of the ball and track its trajectory in the sunlight, twilight or stadium lights. Hitters zero in on a three-inch-wide white ball and discern the spin of its red laces in fractions of a second. While few major league teams offer extensive vision training, the Nationals are hoping to further incorporate it.
