But yogurt and blueberries, flaxseed and salmon? Nutrition plays a key role in skin health, says Meagen McCusker, associate professor of dermatology at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Its really true that you are what you eat, says McCusker, adding that the condition of your skin often tells a story about your overall health and well-being. No wonder, then, that sugar a culprit in many health problems including diabetes and obesity is also involved when it comes to skin health. Foods that keep your blood sugar low are also good for the skin, McCusker says. The first thing I tell people is avoid sugar which includes refined sugar and high-fructose corn syrup and processed foods.

Government Panel: Hormone Therapy ‘not Recommended’

Hormone therapy, calcium may lower fracture risk

Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, a task force member. The proposed recommendations do not apply to women younger than 50 who have undergone surgical menopause or who are taking hormone therapy to manage menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, according to the panel. Government panel: HRT ‘not recommended’ “No shock there,” said Dr. Carolyn Crandall, a professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. “I don’t think the recommendations are surprising at all.” The question used to shape the draft recommendations, which were posted online Tuesday , is whether hormone therapy should be used by menopausal women to prevent a hypothetical future health event such as heart disease or cognitive decline, Bibbins-Domingo said. “These are women who don’t have disease, who don’t have menopause symptoms, who are using the therapies only to prevent something that might happen in the future,” said Bibbins-Domingo, an associate professor of medicine, epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco.

Hot flashes are a symptom of menopause for which some women may seek treatment with hormone replacement therapy.

Preventive Services Task Force said there were no benefits but some risk for post-menopausal women taking low-dose vitamin D and calcium. The group recommended against supplement use to prevent broken bones. For the new study, Jean Wactawski-Wende from the University at Buffalo and her colleagues compared seven years’ worth of fracture data for women in their 50s, 60s and 70s participating in the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study. In one arm of the trial, participants were randomly assigned to take either hormone therapy or a drug-free placebo.

Different Risks for Heart Attack and Stroke Posed By Different Hormone Therapy Formulations

Financial Incentives can Increase the Amount of Exercise People Do

Hormone replacement therapy is usually prescribed for severe hot flashes and other menopause symptoms. A new observational study shows bioidentical hormones in transdermal patches may be associated with a lower risk of heart attack and FDA-approved products — not compounded hormones — may be associated with a slightly lower risk of stroke compared to synthetic hormones in pill form. “If confirmed by future randomized trials, these findings may be significant because for the past decade, many women who experienced severe menopause symptoms opted not to use hormone therapy because of the reported increased risk of stroke and heart attacks,” said Chrisandra Shufelt, MD, director of the Women’s Hormone and Menopause Program at the Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center in the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. Shufelt said the study’s findings are not conclusive and are based on observational follow-up, not a randomized clinical trial. Additionally, all types of hormone therapy had similar rates of total cardiovascular outcomes and all-cause mortality, the study showed.
